Farthingale and bum roll

To make her skirt stick out, Cess has been tied into a Spanish
farthingale, an A-line cone-shaped cage made of taffeta, stiffened with willow ‘bents’ (smooth, bent wooden sticks) and linen straps
to make a very rigid bell shape. Around the top of the farthingale,
at the waist, a maid ties a bumroll. This is a padded roll that will
make her skirts stick out even further.
