Cess’s rough, leather girdle has been given to the pigs to chew.
To meet the Queen she is wearing a gold chain girdle that belonged
to the Countess of Montacute. It is set with turqoise, amber and
agate stones and has a decorative golden pomander dangling from
the end of the chain that smells of expensive cloves and orange oil.
Cloves cost 11 shillings a pound – you can hire a coach and four
horses for a day for that price.
